dc.description.abstractNational Medical Stores (NMS) is an autonomous government corporation that was established in 1993 under Act of Parliament, Chapter 207 of the laws of Uganda by the Ugandan legislature. Its core mandate was to procure, store and distribute pharmaceutical and medical supplies to public health facilities in Uganda (Chap 207). National Medical Stores as at December 2014 had 42,476m³ of storage space in Entebbe, and rents a further 3,500 m³ of warehouse space. The total 45,976m³ of available space at the current premises corresponds to about 8,000 pallet locations that allow the corporation to hold 2 months of stock. The NMS inventory management policy recommends a minimum stock holding of 2 months, an optimum of 4 months, and a maximum of 6 months of stock based on the average monthly consumption. National Medical Stores (NMS) was undergoing rapid changes and a growing mandate to serve the population of Uganda efficiently and effectively with essential medicines and medical supplies. This resulted in an urgent need for additional operational capacity at the central level for ambient storage and cold chain storage. In November 2017, NMS under took the initiative to construct a new purpose built, state of the art pharmaceutical warehouse and office complex. This was in response to the growth in business requiring fast, commensurate and organized warehouse and office space expansion. Ten acres of land was secured in Kajjansi, Wakiso district for the projecten_US
